Homeschooling on the Rise in North Carolina

The number of students being home-schooled in North Carolina continues to increase. According to the latest numbers from the N.C. Department of Administration Non-Public Education Division, 83,609 kids were home-schooled last year. That is a 4.85 percent increase over the previous year. There were a total of 45,524 registered home schools, and two out of every three were religious. Home school advocates are not surprised. (Continue reading this story by clicking here.).

Back before I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) I home-schooled my oldest son. At that time we lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma and they were much more excepting of alternative education. I don't regret the years I home-schooled, my oldest scored incredibly high on his GED to get out of his Public High School and is looking at very good colleges now.

Homeschooling my youngest was a totally different experience. Here in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania they make it nearly impossible to homeschool unless you plan to make it your full time job. It may be just that it was harder because of my MS, but I found it nearly pointless to teach my youngest when everything he had been taught thus far was so wrong. Teenagers in our state graduate every year without the basic knowledge of how to read and write! Knowing that you can just imagine the history I had to re-teach to my youngest.

The problem now is that my MS has prevented me from continuing me to home-school and my youngest is back in public school where all the crap I tried to un-teach is being gone over with him every day! It isn't like they are really teaching it, it is more like they are helping him to memorize it. I want to scream, but at the same time I want him to be able to pass his tests and one day get into a good school. I miss Homeschooling!

That leads me back to the original point, I think Homeschooling is actually on the rise everywhere and not just in North Carolina. The more and more parents learn what their kids are being taught in schools, the less and less they want them there! I think if the States made it easier to home-school you would see an even larger increase in a short period of time.

It's Lucille Ball's 100th Birthday

We still love Lucy: The television star of the classic sitcom 'I Love Lucy' would have been 100 on Saturday (08/06/2011). The whacky red head played Lucy Ricardo, the wife of Ricky (her real-life husband, Desi Arnaz). The show that has been in syndication for decades and celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.

I used to love to watch 'I Love Lucy' and laugh with my Grandma Nanny before she passed. Nanny looked a lot like Lucille Ball, red hair and all! Like many of you out there, I think my favorite episode is either The Chocolate Factory or The Chiquita Banana Lady Dance with the HUGE Fruit Hat! I miss my Nanny very much, and I miss Lucy too. I hope they are together having a blast in the afterlife, wherever and whatever that may be!

Actor Matt Damon Defends Teacher Tenure in Testy Exchange

Actor Matt Damon got into a tense exchange with a journalist from the libertarian Reason TV site after she asked him whether teachers with tenure would lack incentive to work hard at their jobs.

The journalist argued that Damon has an incentive to work hard as an actor because he lacks job security, while teachers do not.

'You think job insecurity makes me work hard?' the actor asked in
disbelief. 'A teacher wants to teach. Why else would you take a sh*tty
salary and really long hours and do that job unless you really love to
do it?'

Damon was speaking at Sunday's Save Our Schools rally, where
thousands of teachers and educators descended on Washington D.C. to
protest the Obama administration's education policies. The rally wasn't
organized by either of the major teachers' unions. (You can read the rest of the article here.)

Spontaneous rallies such as these are a lead up to the 'big one' on October 6th, 2011 officially named Stop the Machine! Create a New World! Expect big names to attend this event followed by extreme rhetoric that will in the end lead to serious violence. The #October2011 group claims to be NON-Violent, however if you check out their website you will see they are offering FREE Legal Assistance and Medical Care in the event of Riots, or other attack.

Be sure to watch out for the increase in rallies, marches, and violent speech as well as action. It does not have to be obviously violent, some will be subtle but aggressive like Matt Damon today. It is actions like this that helps heat the water that will one day boil the frog!

US intelligence launched a fake vaccination drive in the Pakistan town where it believed Osama bin Laden was hiding in an effort to gather DNA from members of his family, the Guardian reported Tuesday.

CIA officials recruited a senior
local doctor to organise the campaign after it tracked down a bin Laden
courier to what turned out to be the Al-Qaeda fugitive's compound in the town of Abbottabad, the British newspaper said.

Before launching the high-risk
operation against bin Laden, US officials wanted to test DNA samples
from people living at the compound with a sample that they had from his
sister.

Doctor Shakil Afridi, who has since been arrested by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency, launched the programme in Abbottabad's poorest area to make it appear more credible.

The project then moved swiftly to the Bilal Town suburb, where bin Laden was residing.

'The whole thing was totally irregular,' a Pakistani official told
the newspaper. 'Bilal Town is a well-to-do area. Why would you choose
that place to give free vaccines?'

A nurse managed to gain access to the compound but Pakistani sources
claim she failed to obtain any DNA samples, the Guardian reported.

Bin Laden was killed on May 2 in a raid that soured US-Pakistan relations.

The Pakistani military on Monday
insisted it was capable of fighting Islamic militants without US
assistance, hitting back after Washington said it would suspend $800
million worth of security aid.
